Kit Digital, Kit Consulting and Kit Espacios de Datos: where each grant stands and what you can do today

Spain's three major digitalization grants are closed. Here's where each one really stands, without made-up headlines, and what to prepare today so you can apply on the first day the next call opens.

We review this page every time the official status of any of the three grants changes. If you spot anything out of date, write to us and we'll fix it.

If you landed here searching for “when is Kit Digital coming back,” you've probably come across dozens of headlines like “Kit Digital is back!” or “New call: limited places.” Almost all of them start from a real fact—a change published in the BOE (Spain's Official State Gazette) in January 2026—and get it wrong.

Let's be clear from the start: as of today, there is no open call for applications for Kit Digital (the Spanish government's digitalization grant program) or Kit Consulting (its counterpart for strategic consulting), and the application period for Kit Espacios de Datos (the grant for joining data spaces) has already ended.

That doesn't mean there's nothing to do. It means that what needs doing isn't filling in a form, but getting ready. And that preparation is exactly what makes the difference between applying on day one and missing out.

Why there's so much noise about this

In January 2026, two ministerial orders were published in the BOE: TDF/39/2026, which amends the regulatory bases of Kit Digital, and TDF/38/2026, which does the same for Kit Consulting. Both allow leftover funds that were never spent to be reinvested in the program itself: waivers, withdrawn applications, vouchers that expired unredeemed, services that were never justified.

Here's the confusion you'll see repeated in almost every article out there: amending a program's regulatory bases and issuing a call for grants are two different things, and they don't happen at the same time.

Amending the bases means preparing the legal framework. Issuing a call means opening a specific application period, with specific amounts and specific requirements, through a resolution published in the BOE and in the Base de Datos Nacional de Subvenciones (Spain's National Grants Database).

The first has happened. The second hasn't yet.

Any website that gives you a “confirmed” opening date today or talks about “limited places” is making it up. There are no places: grants under these programs are awarded on a non-competitive basis, that is, strictly first come, first served until the budget runs out. Nobody can save you a spot.

    Where each program actually stands

    Kit Digital

    Status: closed to new applications.

Kit Digital is Investment 3 of Component 13 of Spain's Recovery Plan, with roughly €3,067 million in NextGenerationEU funds. Between 2021 and 2025, it awarded more than 900,000 grants across five calls.

The last open window was for Segment III (self-employed workers and companies with 0 to fewer than 3 employees), which closed on October 31, 2025. No new call has been published since.

Amounts from previous calls, as a reference for what you might expect:

    SegmentHeadcountVoucher
I10 to fewer than 50 employeesup to €12,000
II3 to fewer than 10 employeesup to €6,000
III0 to fewer than 3 employeesup to €3,000

There was also a dedicated line for mid-sized companies with 50 to 250 employees, with vouchers of €25,000 (50 to fewer than 100 workers) and €29,000 (100 to fewer than 250). It was the first time the official catalog included AI-based tools as an eligible solution, a fundamental shift that will likely shape the design of future calls.

The key point: the program has not been repealed. Order TDF/39/2026 keeps it in force until the funds run out, with no calendar deadline. What ran out were the application windows, not the program.

    Kit Consulting

    Status: call closed.

Kit Consulting was launched in September 2024, with its bases set out in Order TDF/436/2024 and a budget of €300 million. Unlike Kit Digital, it doesn't fund software purchases: it funds strategic consulting. Assessment, roadmap, use cases.

    SegmentHeadcountVoucher
A10 to fewer than 50 employeesup to €12,000
B50 to fewer than 100 employeesup to €18,000
C100 to fewer than 250 employeesup to €24,000

The official portal lists the call as closed and does not accept new applications. Order TDF/38/2026 requires Red.es (the public agency that runs these programs) to reinvest any unspent remainder in the program itself, even after 2026. The framework is ready for new calls without having to amend the rules again. They just haven't been published yet.

A figure worth keeping in mind: 82% of the SMEs that received Kit Consulting were also Kit Digital beneficiaries. The programs are compatible and complementary, and those who plan well use both.

    Kit Espacios de Datos

Status: application period ended March 31, 2026.

This is the newest and least known of the three. It is governed by Order TDF/758/2025 of July 11, and Red.es launched the call (C055/25-SI) with €60 million. The window opened on November 3, 2025, and closed on March 31, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.

    Maximum amounts:

Type of entityAs a participantAs a data provider
Private and public entities with economic activityup to €15,000up to €30,000
Public administrationsup to €25,000up to €50,000

At one point, the Red.es online portal indicated that it had received applications exceeding the available budget, which gives you an idea of how much interest it generated.

What it covered and what it didn't. Eligible expenses were business, legal or technical advisory services; software for data connection, governance, processing and security; and tools for regulatory compliance and use-case deployment. Hardware, infrastructure, membership fees, data purchases, VAT, training and financial costs were not eligible.

This distinction trips up more applications at the justification stage than any other, and we'll come back to it below.

    What you can do today

Here's the useful part. When a grant is awarded first come, first served, the work doesn't get done when the window opens: it gets done beforehand. The companies that apply on day one are the ones that already had everything sorted out.

This is what we go over with a client who wants to be ready:

    1. 1

A valid digital certificate with the right powers of attorney. It sounds obvious, and it's the number one cause of delays. Check the expiration date and, if it's a representative's certificate, make sure the registered powers of attorney cover applying for grants. Renewing a certificate with notaries involved can take three weeks you won't have.

    2. 2

Being up to date with the Tax Agency and Social Security. The authorities check this on their own, at the moment you apply. An unresolved payment deferral or a minor disputed debt can sink your application without anyone warning you.

    3. 3

Consistent tax registration details. Your tax address, IAE (business activity tax) code and registration date have to match what you're going to declare. Discrepancies between Form 036 (the tax registration form) and the Commercial Registry trigger requests for additional documentation.

    4. 4

Calculating your average annual headcount. It determines your segment and, therefore, the amount you can apply for. It isn't today's headcount: it's the average for the reference year set by the call. Having it calculated and documented with your TC2 forms (Social Security contribution reports) saves you a request for documentation.

    5. 5

De minimis check. There's a cumulative cap on de minimis aid per company and period. If you've received other grants, you have to add them up. Exceeding the limit is grounds for rejection and, if it's detected later, for repayment.

    6. 6

Knowing what you're going to ask for, and making sure it's coherent. Especially with Kit Consulting and Kit Espacios de Datos, where what gets funded is advisory work, the project report has to describe a real project with a real problem. Generic reports are spotted right away and trigger a request for clarification.

    7. 7

Having your accredited agent or advisor lined up. You don't receive the voucher as cash: it's redeemed through a digitalizing agent or a registered digital advisor, who implements the solution, formalizes the agreement and submits the justification to the authorities. In previous calls, agreements were formalized on a first-come, first-served basis until funds ran out.

The mistakes that sink the most applications

After more than ten years handling grants and public tenders, these are the ones we see again and again:

    Confusing awarded with paid.

The award decision isn't the end. If the service isn't delivered on time and properly justified, there's no payment. And in some cases, you have to pay the grant back with interest.

    Claiming ineligible expenses.

The classic Kit Espacios de Datos case: putting hardware or training into an expense report that only allows advisory services, software and tools. The entire line item gets rejected.

    Missing the justification deadlines.

Delivery and justification schedules run from the award decision, not from whenever you happen to remember. Once the deadline has passed, there's no way to fix it.

    Not keeping the evidence.

You need to be able to prove actual onboarding, delivery of the service, the deliverables. “We did it” isn't evidence. Invoices, signed agreements, dated deliverables and system screenshots are.

Choosing a provider on price instead of reliability.

If your digitalizing agent disappears halfway through the project, the administrative problem is yours, not theirs.

Where to look so you don't miss anything

Any real call shows up first in three places. If it isn't there, it doesn't exist:

    • The BOE (boe.es), where the orders setting the regulatory bases and the call summaries are published.
    • The Red.es online portal (sede.red.gob.es), where applications are submitted.
    • The Base de Datos Nacional de Subvenciones, the official register of all Spanish government calls.

Also add Acelera Pyme (acelerapyme.gob.es), the program's official portal, which hosts the digital maturity self-assessment test.

These sources are free and public. Dealing with the administration itself is always free, too.

    In short

Spain's three major national digitalization grants are closed today. The legal framework is ready for new calls to be published, and there's a stated intention to continue, most likely with more weight on artificial intelligence. But there are no dates.

What there is, though, is a window to get ready. When these grants are awarded first come, first served and the budget runs out before the deadline—as has already happened—the difference between getting one and not getting one is decided in the weeks beforehand, not on opening day.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for Kit Digital right now?

No. The calls for applications have been closed since October 31, 2025, and Red.es has not published a new one. The program is still legally in force, but you can only apply once an official call is published.

    Has Kit Digital been canceled?

No. Order TDF/39/2026 keeps the program in force until the funds run out. What ended were the application periods of the previous calls.

When will the next call open?

No date has been published. Anyone who gives you a specific date today is speculating. It will appear first in the BOE (Spain's Official State Gazette) and in the Base de Datos Nacional de Subvenciones (Spain's National Grants Database).

Are Kit Digital and Kit Consulting compatible?

Yes, they complement each other: one funds the implementation of solutions and the other funds strategic consulting. In fact, 82% of the SMEs that received Kit Consulting were also Kit Digital beneficiaries.

I'm self-employed with no employees. Can I apply for Kit Consulting?

No. Kit Consulting requires a minimum headcount of 10 employees. The route for the self-employed and micro-businesses is Kit Digital, Segment III.

How long does it take for an application to be decided?

The maximum legal period is usually six months, although in practice it depends on the volume of applications. Applications with complete, verifiable documentation are decided sooner.
